WELCOME! Rock Star Update 8/23/18

Hello!  I am so pleased to have your child in my class and I can't wait to see you all at Open House! I have a lot to share, so PLEASE read this e-mail in it's entirety and check those green folders nightly!
The First Few Days
We had a wonderful first week in room 132!  We read lots of books and played many games to break the ice.  Lots of new friendships formed, and a few older ones were rekindled, too!  It was great learning all about your children from the surveys you filled out for me, it really helped me pick out some commonalities of interests to start conversations. Your children are all so sweet and I am already in love! We learned all about the rules and procedures in our classroom and school. 
Beginning Monday,  I will assess all of them one on one to get an idea of their strengths and weaknesses academically.  I look forward to sharing this information with you at our first conference in October.  
Shout out to Mrs. Amber, Hayleigh's mother.  She stayed with me this past Monday and helped me finish labeling supplies, as well as many other tedious tasks.  I am so grateful for her support this first week!
OPEN HOUSE
Call your babysitter.  Open House is scheduled for 6:30 PM on Wednesday, September 5th.  I will share the academic standards your children will be exposed to this year, as well as some rules and procedures.  Please try to attend.  If you are unable to attend that evening, I will share the information shared via e-mail the next day. 
BOX TOPS
Send them in, we are collecting them! Each Box Top earns money for our school! 
PTA
The PTA has a new website, click here to access it.  You can join the PTA for $5.  Information was sent home in the green folder.  The first PTA meeting will be Tuesday, September 11th at 8:30AM.  Be involved! :) 
MEDIA
Your little ones will visit Mrs. Reid in the media center on Day 10 of the Specials rotation.  Please make sure they take VERY good care of the book, and it is due back the next time we have Media.  The Specials calendar can be accessed here. I will mark it on future behavior calendars as well. 
PAWSITIVE READING PROGRAM
In September your children will meet our two dogs, and their owner, Barbara, from the Pawsitive Reading Program.  We are going to have a four-legged friend in our classroom every single Friday morning!  You can learn more about the program by clicking here. .
SUPPLIES
Thank you for sending in the forms and supplies. Now I can share the photo website. Soon you will receive a generic e-mail from Shutterfly.  I am only using the website to share pictures, not all the other features it advertises. I highly recommend you download the app, it is very user friendly and your little Rock Star will LOVE looking at the pictures with you. :)

FAMILY PICTURES
Please send in a picture of your family to add to our family wall. We love having your picture there, as it places a face with the name when they are telling stories. It's also great to have when they miss you!
SHOELACES
Your little one should know how to tie their shoelaces. If the traditional way is hard for them, search online for different ways to do it.  Here is a video I found that looks pretty neat!  Please practice this nightly until they get it, or buy velcro shoes. 
HOMEWORK
I value family time, and I don't believe in busy worksheets.  Your child should be doing at least 15 minutes of i-Ready Reading a night. This should be done independently and is for a grade.  They know how to log in. The information is on the front of their green folder. Your children have time to complete their Math homework in class, please review it with them at home each night. It is in the "Math Homework" tab in their green folders.  Please don't worry, I will give you a technology lesson at Open House. The most important thing you can do every single night is expose your young reader to literacy.  This can be done many ways! You can read to them, they can read to you, they can read along to a book on Tumblebooks or Story Time Online, both sites can be found here.   If they are watching TV, put the closed captions on so they see the words as they hear them!  This is one of the most important (and hardest) years of their schooling. The growth they will make this year as readers is HUGE!  Let's work together to ensure their success!
